American Idol Season 10 with Assistance by Timbaland

BIG NEWS from American Idol for Season 10 today. Not only do we get 2 new judges, Steven Tyler of Aerosmith and Jennifer Lopez of Obscurity; not only do we get Jimmy Iovine chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M Records acting as an in-house mentor to contestants; but Jimmy will be getting some assistance from one Polow Da Don and Timbaland-please-no-more-dance-songs Mosley!

"We're going to try every week to bring the artist along and really give them some input," Iovine said. "Nigel [Lythgoe] has been coaching me on how to do that in the course of the show. Timbaland and Polow [Da Don] are here to help; every week we're going to have the best producers in the world helping these artists. Contestants are going to have to show improvement every week."

"We are no longer going to get the country singer to sing rock," Lythgoe said. "We-and Jimmy-going to get them to stay in the genre they belong." The music choices will vary more by decade this year, he said, as opposed to changing up themes entirely."

Timbo doin' it BIG! Get ready for many more Timbo productions coming soon!

(Unfinished) Video: Keri Hilson "Breaking Point"

Check out the leaked and unfinished version of Keri's video for the Timbo produced first single "Breaking Point" from her sophomore album No Boys Allowed

Lovin' the doo wap vibe of this track. Definitely a grower!

Get To Know Nisan Stewart

As we've always done at The Chronicles, we not only want everyone to get their Timbo fix but to also get an education along with it. With that said you all know Nisan right? Yes the producer from Tweet's Southern Hummingbird but Nisan is not only much more than that but he's been around a lot longer than you think. How far back you ask? 2005? 2002? How about 1998 back when Timbaland was looking to put together for a TV spot when he found the incredible drummer at church and immediately knew the very talented Mr. Stewart had to be a part of the Timmy family. From Missy Elliott to Nelly Furtado, Aaliyah to Tweet, Nisan has been a long time collaborator with Timbo and the crew.

Check out this informative article on Nisan and how he came to become a local church drummer to touring the world with the best musicians in the world.

It's definitely better to go in with Missy Elliot. A lot of times we'll go in - I do a lot of production for her stuff and with other stuff, but to use her as an example we'll go in and do a bunch of tracks. Just be in the studio, just vibe out. Sometimes if I'm at home, like today I hot track and I'm gonna send it off to her. She's over in Scotland right now."

"I work down in Miami a lot. I work in Miami mostly. This year I'll spend most of the year in Miami. A lot of times it might be in New York. In the music industry they record in shifts like cause' it was kind of slow out here in L.A. for a minute compared to what was going on in Miami. Everybody was down there in Miami working at the Hit Factory. When we were down there a lot of people were there. From Jazz writers - to the Neptunes would be in one room me and Missy would be in one room, Puff Daddy would have a room and Timbaland would be in another room and Enrique Eglesias would be in there cuttin' tracks. I just like to have my own stuff so that's why I've got my own studio so I can do my own thing."

Shock Value III in the works?!

So says Marcus Spence, President of Mosley Music Group:

I think shock value 3 is coming very soon

Let's hope it's better than number 2!

Speaking of Mr. Spence, did you know that along with the busy job of running MMG he also formed his own entertainment company called Ten2One Entertainment back in 2009? And do you know who he formed that company with?

None other than Paul Coy Allen.

Yes the same Paul Coy Allen who has done music videos for Timbo's "Morning After Dark", "Say Something", "If We Ever Meet Again", "Give It To Me", Sebastian's "Wobbley", Petey Pablo's "Go", and many other projects.

Check out the website for up to date news and new releases. It's all one, big happy family!

Southernaire All-Stars "Ghetto" produced by Timbaland

Attention all hard core Timbo fans, the wait is over as we have yet another long sought after Timbaland track the one and only "Ghetto" by the Southernaire All-Stars:

Track is pure FIRE with guest appearances by Static, Native, Yaushameen (who kills her verse), and J-Bird. This track has been known about for many years but was thought to be buried deep in the vaults of Timbo unreleased music. I was very close to getting the track many years ago but it wasn't meant to be. However, the folks over at Static Major is Music break us off with yet another exclusive. BIG props!

Sample of the Week AND Who Flipped It Better

It's your boy Boogie here coming with another edition of the famous sample of the week but this week I'm bringing a little extra with an added Who Flipped It Better? bonus. You ready? Here we go....

For this edition, I thought I'd start with the Timbo song first. The year was 1998 and Missy Elliott, along with Timbaland's help, was introducing the newest siren to the family none other than the teenage Nicole "Nikki" Wray. What better platform to launch a career then a hot ass song, yes one dope and catchy track called "Make It Hot":

So which sample am I talking about? Here it is again: Let's go to 2004 when Kanye West released his debut album The College Dropout with the dope track "Two Words":

Hear it yet? It should be pretty obvious but just in case let's look at another track. Fast forward to just a few months ago when Eminem released his 7th studio album Recovery and the Mr. Porter track "On Fire":

Hear the sample I'm talking about? Yes it's the "AHHHHH!" So first thing is first Who Flipped It Better?

Now on to the sample itself. It originally comes from 40 years ago from the band Mandrill and their track "Peace and Love (Amani Na Mapenzi): Movement IV (Encounter)" (yes that's the name). Here it is:

Now I say originally because even though this is where the sample comes from, Timbaland and possibly Kanye and Mr. Porter, got the sample off a sample CD. Do you know which one?

Czar you reading? Stick to your next sample mix cuz you don't want another sample war son!

Money "Check That Bitch" & "Touch" (Full Versions)

It's been a long time since we've heard anything from Walter Milsap's artist Money but we have gotten the full versions of 2 of her pasts track both produced by Milsap:

"Touch"

"Check That Bitch"

No word on a release date but Money is still working on putting together her debut album with the help of Milsap and Candice Nelson. Make sure to follow her on Twitter as well @Money2121

Props to everyone who sent over the tracks!

Kevin McCall Works With Timbaland

Writer, singer, producer, and current #1 song holder Kevin McCall recently talked about his near passing out working with Timbaland:

Another "euro pop" track, great just what we need. So much for the "organic" sound that Timbo talked about.

Expect big things from this up and coming cat!

Timbaland and "Dania" Nominated for BET Hip Hop Award for Dirty Money's "Hello Good Morning"

Say whaaaat? Obviously the Dania is a typo but Timbaland contributed to the track!?

This according to the BET Website both Dania and Timbaland are nominated for their production on Diddy's Dirty Money project and their track "Hello Good Morning."

Maybe Timbo really did contribute to the track and we just didn't know it. Otherwise, BET has really got their information messed up. Stay tuned!

Unrelased Jay-Z F/ Chris Martin "Most Kingz" produced by Timbaland

DJ Green Lantern recently dropped his Invasion Radio 2k10 which contains the track Jay-Z "Most Kingz" featuring Coldplay's front man Chris Martin that Lantern produced but there's actually a really cool back sotry to the track. The vocals for this were originally recorded for Kingdom Come but it never made the album becuase the beat couldn't be found. Say what!?

As it turns out, pieces of the verses ended up on the 2006 Grammy Family freestyle on Hot97 with Funk Master Flex as well as Coldplay’s "Lost" (Remix). Lanterns went on to explain the accapella went floated around to many different producers including Timbo:

This is my version working with the acapella. I’ve had this since 2006 and it was supposed to be on the Presidential Invasion mixtape–that never came out. Then Hov rapped these lyrics over his HP commercial drums, and the acapella went to a few different producers in search of a beat for it. I heard a Timbaland version and I think Just Blaze and a few others had it too. But by the time they made Beach Chair, I think Jay was over trying to find a beat for Most Kingz. Then he went to Flex show and the rest is history

Here's Lantern's version:

Big props to Christoph for the info!

Missy Elliott "Work It" Remix F/ Baby Sham and Rah Digga

Check out this unofficial remix I had never heard of before featuring Baby Sham and Rah Digga from the Flipmode Squad:

Digga should have been on the official remix, she killed her verses!

Did ya'll catch that?! "Jigga What Jigga Who" was made in 5 minutes! Not just the beat but the verses. Say whaaaat??

Senator Jimmy Douglass Talks His Craft and Working With Timbaland

If you remember back in 2006 we posted a the pod casts of Jimmy D sharing his knowledge and insight about his career, his views, and the history of music making to those lucky enough to attend his session at the Red Bull Music Academy.

But it's not only knowledge he shares, but some very familiar music and some surprises as well. We know have the video so check it out:

Jimmy D at the Red Bull Music Academy

Obviously the track he's talking about working with Timbo and the very bored Rapture is "No Sex For Ben."

but the REALLY interesting part of the interview that I must have missed or it was not included in the first podcasts we posted is when Jimmy D plays the track we've all been craving for years none other than Ricky Martin's "Bare My Soul"(this is where the snippet we all have originated from by the way).

Well listen to what Jimmy D says about it: "it's a record about him coming out of the closet." So that means of all people Jimmy Douglass out Ricky Martin 4 years before it was "official." Hilarious...

Enjoy the session! Props to Donny on the video.

Did You Know: Lushone "Nikki" Siplin

Calling all old school Timbo fans here's a little history for you. As we all know, the first "official" Timbo produced album was Ginuwine's Da Bachelor that included the track "Holler" featuring a previoulsy unknown female MC named Nikki/Virginia Slim: Well you probably don't know it but that wasn't the last time you heard Nikki. Go pull out your Missy Supa Dupa Fly albums and listen to "Gettaway" featuring Space and Nicole.....aka Nikki! (with a much deeper voice and changed up flow). But that's not at all, Nikki was featured on another track under yet another name as St. Nick on the original version of "Luv 2 Luv Ya" with yet another type flow. Yep Nikki was Faye Dunaway wantin' us to squeeze on her nipples this whole time, who knew?! St. Nick was part of the original SupaFriendz crew invited to The Bassment by Dalvin Degrate of Jodeci on a chance meeting. Missy shouts out "St. Nick" along with all the other SupaFriendz at the begining of "Izzy Izzy Ahh" and Timbaland also gives prop to "Nikki" and the rest of the SupaFriendz crew on "Intro Buddha". HUGE props to Buddha for the revelations!

50 Cent Talks Timbaland's New Collabos

Take a listen to the interview with 50 Cent where's he asked about Timbaland's possible "loss of credibility" via Shock Value II and working with the likes of Kate Perry and Miley Cyrus:

50 Cent could not have said it any better: "I don't think his [Timbaland's] original fanbase is interested in what that song would sound like." As one of those original Timbo fans, I couldn't agree more. Branching out is one thing, but created formulated music just for the money is something totally different. Bring back the "old" Timbo!

Petey Pablo Arrested

In his haste to get to this year's MTV VMA's, Petey Pablo forgot to leave his gun at home apparently. Instead he put it in his carry on and tried to board his flight. Problem is airport security doesn't let you take a bottle of water past their area let alone a gun. Petey was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a stolen firearm. We're told he posted $50,000 and was released.

Hold ya' head up Petey!

Making Of Sebastian's "Wobbley" (Remix)

Check out this video of the making of Sebastian's video for the remix of "Wobbley":

So of course you're excited for the video but besides that what else are you thinking? Yep who produced that track throughout the Making Of....my bet is on Wizz

Ginuwine Channels His Inner B Boy

We've all seen Ginuwine's classic video for "None Of Ur Business"

The video version includes the dope dance sequence with G poppin' and lockin' to what I hope we all know by now is the famous
song by George Krantz called "Din Da Da." Well for all you old school breakers like me you know the track was featured in the movie Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo and you also also know that G was obviously inspired by it too by this particular scene from the movie:

Go Turbo!

Timbaland on DH Hero 2

I've been trying to get more news on the DJ Hero 2 collabo for months but finally we get to know what track Timbo is on the game. None other than his global smash "The Way I Are":

Here's another one with Tweet's "Ooops(Oh My)"

Timbaland Cancels Malaysia Tour

Sadly due to "unforseen circumstances" (schedule conflict?) Timbaland will not be performing in Malaysia for Athur's Day much to the disappointment of many of his fans there. None the less the show will go on with performances by Flo Rida, Sean Kingston, Colby O'Donis, Thai-American hip-hop band Thaitanium, local independent rap-rock band Pop Shuvit, R&B artistes Mizz Nina and Melisa Indot, plus turntable guru DJ Fuzz.

I've got my own theory as to why this isn't happening but we'll have to wait and find out.

Sorry Moe!

Timbaland has most Top 40 hits in 4 years!

Billboard magazine reports Timbaland has had the most Top 40 Billboard Hot 100 singles since 2005. His run includes number-one singles with Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado, in addition to producing numerous Top 40 hits for the likes of Drake, Katy Perry, Keri Hilson and One Republic. All told, Timbaland has 25 Top 40 hits during the last five years.

Longtime The-Dream collaborators Stargate are second with 22 Top 40 Billboard Hot 100 placements, including the Beyonce's "Irreplaceable" and "So Sick" by Ne-Yo.

Lukaz "Dr. Luke" Gottwald, whose most notable Hip Hop contribution is Flo Rida's "Right Round" is tied for third place with Nathan Chapman. Both producers have 21 Top 40 placements to their credit over the last five years.

Finally, former Jim Crow member Polow Da Don and Timbaland protege Danjahandz round out the top five with 18 Top 40 Hot 100 songs since 2005.

Go Timbo! Go Danja!

TLC "Dirty Dirty" Alternate Version

Check out yet another Timbaland alternate. This one is for TLC's "Dirty Dirty"

Have you figured out the video game Tim sampled from? Ask Usher....

3 Unreleased Tracks by 1 Life 2 Live

We posted the recent interview with this crew and now we get a 3 previously unheard tracks by them called to check out:

"Show Love"

"Never Fall In Love With Hoes"

"Throw It Up Ya'll"

Not Timbaland tracks but despite that you can definitely hear all their talents as MC's, especially Babe Blue. Too bad they never released an album. Would have been hot!

Keri Hilson "Still A Girl" Leak Vs. Single (let's hope)

Here's one of the most boring songs in the world produced by someone who isn't Timbo or Polow:

I hope this isn't a repeat of the last album, where half of it leaks or are singles before it actually comes out. Love you Keri but you're better than this!

Pharrell of The Neptunes recently let the world know that not only has he been working with every major artist in the industry these days, but that's he's also been creating some magic with Timbo. Check it out:

The BBC, Ice Cream [his clothing labels] – we’re doing some amazing things with Timbaland. And then, um, I dunno. I just went in with T.I., just went in with Gucci Mane, Nicki Minaj, uh, Shay’s stuff, Avril Lavigne – all people who wanted to try different things. Ciara, Rihanna…”

Will it be a co-production? Or solo Timbo for the next N.E.R.D album? Looks like we'll have to wait and see....

More Hard Candy Leaks

A number of tracks from Madonna's Hard Candy album have leaked over the past few days, and here are the Timbo (and presumably Danja) produced ones.

"Across the Sky" (Alternate...perhaps final? version):

"Animal":

"Latte/La La":

Thoughts? We'll update this post if/when there are more leaks.

Madonna-"Infinity" Produced by Timbo? Neptunes?

You know we love mysteries here at TCC, and there seems to be a mystery surrounding this newly leaked Madonna track, "Infinity," that was slated for her Hard Candy album:

"Infinity" seems to feature that shaker sound that's in Missy's "Wake Up" and the Timbo Mobile Underground remix to Madonna's "4 Minutes," and I think I hear Justin Timberlake on background vocals. So with all this, it must be produced by Timbo...right? Well, here's the thing about this track, it's reported as produced by Timbaland AND a demo for "Give it 2 Me," which we all know was produced by the Neptunes. Hmmmmmm. So what's the deal with this record? Is it produced by Timbaland? Did the Neptunes do it? What do you think? Let us know!

Sample of the Week Throwback: "Are you that Somebody?"

It's been a while since I've done this, but I got that itch today, and thought it would be nice to do a sample of the week...and this one is going to be an oldy, but goody.

For those who've been followers of TCC since the beginning in 2006, you might remember that in 2007 I posted three possible songs that were sampled for Aaliyah's 1998 hit "Are you that Somebody?" (my favorite Aaliyah track, by the way). I let the Tim stans duke it out over which one they thought it was. Three years later, this debate is still going on, and I thought I'd let the old and new Tim stans fight it out all over again. So here we go:

The first theory that I heard about the baby sound was that it was sampled from Prince's "Delirious" off his 1999 album. If you listen to the very end of the track, you'll hear the exact same baby laugh that's found on "Are you that Somebody?"

Second rumored I heard was that Tim sampled the baby laugh from "this song" featured on the 1982 classic film Wild Style.

Now, usually the argument goes between these two tracks, but some have also argued that Tim sampled "this record" from 1966.

So there you have it. Three songs, three exact sample baby sounds, but which track do you think Tim got it from? Do you know of any other songs with the same sample that you think is the real sample? I have my own theory about this, but I'll keep it to myself till later lol.

That's it for this week's installment. Check back next time (perhaps next Friday?)for "Czar's Sample of the Week."

And for those who've been asking me about a Timbaland Sample Mix Volume 9...you'll just have to wait and see ;-)

Peace,
C.Z.A.R.

Pitchfork Names Top 200 Tracks of the '90s, Timbaland Productions Make List

The staff over at Pitchfork just released their "Top 200 Tracks of the 1990s," and probably to no one's surprise, Timbaland's name can be found all over the list (some songs are discussed in "pre" and "post" Timbaland terms, which really shows his influence on popular music). While Timbo himself didn't make the list as an artist, three of his produced tracks are among the top 200, and one of those even made the top 10! Here are the three songs that made the list, and what the Pitchfork staff had to say about them:

8. Aaliyah
"Are you that Somebody"
[Atlantic; 1998]

Late-90s Timbaland was the epitome of audacious, screwball production genius, and Aaliyah was his ideal foil, a sultrily cool singer who did for melodic tension-and-release what other R&B singers were doing for showy melisma. Subsequently, "Are You That Somebody" sounds outlandish to the point where it comes across like a challenge from producer to singer-- and it's a challenge easily met. Tim's beat is borderline ridiculous, a rubbery, surreptitiously funky bounce that sounds like "Looney Tunes" composer Carl Stalling had been commissioned to rework a Catfish Collins chicken-scratch guitar riff.

But the aspects that might come across as goofy at first-- the baby coo sourced from Prince's "Delirious"; the beatboxing that sounds like broken castanets; the fact that it first emerged on the soundtrack to the Eddie Murphy version of Dr. Doolittle-- are offset by Aaliyah's characteristically deft performance, balancing an uncanny ability to wring new angles out of a deceptively simple melody and the chops to let her singing naturally jump from smooth longing to nimble rhythmic counterpoints. The moment in the chorus where her voice finally wraps itself entirely around that stagger-step beat and rolls out with the same fluidity as the frenetic bassline-- "causeIreallyneedsomebody/tellmeareyouthatsomebody"-- is everything great about late-90s R&B in one burst of inspiration. --Nate Patrin

33. Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott
"The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)"
[Elektra; 1997]

If you were a rap hit in 1997, there's a ballpark 70% chance Puff Daddy was your midwife. (Diddy actually wanted Missy Elliot for Bad Boy on the strength of her work with Timbaland on Aaliyah's records, and praise be that she went her own way.) This was not the weather for slinky, weird rap debuts, but being unprecedented is usually marketable somehow. (Didn't hurt that Hype Williams put her in what looked like a trash bag for the video.) A relief from stereotypes, sexier than most sex talk-- visionary stuff rarely makes the Top 10 anyhow. --Mike Powell

104. Ginuwine
"Pony"
[550 Music/ Sony Music Entertainment/ Epic; 1996]

Wherein the sound of a burping processed voice personifies sex. That belching roll came courtesy of Timbaland in his first jaw-dropper, and Elgin Lumpkin-- Ginuwine's wisely ditched government name-- obliged with the sort of on-the-nose sexual metaphor that made 90s R&B such a delightfully literal piece of American musical history. "If you're horny, let's do it; ride it, my pony." That is a masterful exegesis on cut-to-the-chase. But though Ginuwine has become a genuinely underrated R&B figure-- time is unkind to the lot-- Timbaland used "Pony" to catapult himself into the conversation for most innovative and exciting producer of the half-decade. Indeed, he did most of his best work, including albums for Aaliyah, Missy Elliott, and Playa and stunning select single and remix work for Jay-Z, Jodeci, and Usher in the years that followed.

But "Pony" remains an indefatigable thing, a signifier for "different" R&B, challenging in its strangeness-- the burping, the quiet moan on the intro, those skitting hi-hats, the mechanical hissing of pistons-- that it remains an inspiration 14 years on. Timbaland did more sensual work at almost the exact same time as he worked with Aaliyah on her One in a Million but he never unleashed such unbridled, skin-pressed sex on wax again. --Sean Fennessey

Since Pitchfork decided the list should only name one song per artist, "One in a Million," "Hot like Fire," "Make it hot," and "Sock it 2 Me" received honorable mention type of accolades.

Congrats, Timbo!!!
